Vibration Monitoring for Paper Machines

Vibration Monitoring for Paper Machines

Continuous paper production leaves little room for unexpected mechanical problems. Rolls, bearings, drives, gearboxes, pumps, fans and vacuum systems operate as one connected process. Changes in vibration can provide early evidence of bearing wear, imbalance, misalignment, looseness or drivetrain problems before they develop into a larger production issue.

Why paper machines are challenging to monitor

A paper machine combines many rotating assets on a long, mechanically connected structure. Vibration from one source can travel through bearing housings, frames and foundations, so reliable condition assessment depends on trending and diagnostic context rather than a single vibration value.

Operating conditions also vary with machine speed, grade, loading, felt condition, steam and vacuum levels. Continuous monitoring helps maintenance teams distinguish normal process-related changes from developing mechanical degradation.

Different sections, different measurement conditions

  • Forming section: high humidity, water spray and possible chemical exposure; many assets operate at relatively low speed.
  • Press section: water, chemicals, rolls and felt circuits require robust sensor installation and cabling.
  • Dryer section: elevated temperatures, steam and higher roll speeds make sensor temperature capability especially important.
  • Calender and reel: roll condition, bearings, drives and machine configuration determine the best measurement points.

Where continuous vibration monitoring adds value

Typical monitoring points include sectional and main drives, motors, gearboxes, roll bearing housings, fans, blowers, vacuum pumps, process pumps and other balance-of-plant equipment. Trending these assets supports earlier detection of bearing deterioration, imbalance, misalignment, looseness and gear-related defects.

VibSys for distributed paper-machine monitoring

Istec VibSys provides four vibration channels in a compact DIN-rail platform that can be installed close to the machine. Multiple units can be distributed along a production line, reducing long sensor cable runs while making monitoring scalable.

VibSys works with compatible IEPE vibration sensors and is not restricted to Istec-branded sensors. Sensor choice should be based on speed range, temperature, humidity, chemical exposure, mounting arrangement and the diagnostic objective.

Local processing and interfaces can support plant integration, while vibration data can be used for deeper analysis and long-term condition trending. VibSys is intended for condition monitoring and diagnostics; it is not a machinery protection or shutdown system.

Sensor installation and cabling matter

On long paper machines, cable routing should be planned together with sensor locations. Avoid routing sensor cables across the production process, protect connections against the local environment and keep installation practical for maintenance access and machine cleaning.
