Contactors & DC Switching

Control power. Define the switching duty.

The right contactor starts with the circuit.

Connecting a battery, reversing a motor and switching a high-voltage DC bus are different jobs. Start with the function, then match the complete contactor specification to the load and control system.

What does your application need?

Keep a machine powered

A main contactor may remain energised for long periods. Coil duty, operating temperature and holding requirements belong in the specification.

Move forwards and backwards

Winches and material-handling equipment can require reversing arrangements. Identify the motor circuit before selecting contact configuration.

Manage a DC power bus

Battery systems and charging equipment need coordinated switching. Pre-charge, protection and fault handling must be designed at system level.

A better enquiry starts here

Four steps towards the right selection.

Define the load

Tell us whether the circuit supplies a motor, resistive load, capacitive input or another device. Include operating voltage and normal current.

Separate carrying from switching

Include making current, breaking current, switching frequency and duty. A current label alone does not describe all of these conditions.

Match the control circuit

Confirm coil voltage, continuous or intermittent coil duty, suppression, auxiliary contacts and the full part-number suffix.

Check the installation

Allow for mounting orientation, terminals, enclosure, ambient conditions and the manufacturer’s application limits.

Bring us the application.

Already have a part number? Send it with quantity and delivery destination. For a new selection, include:

Circuit function, load type, DC voltage, carrying/making/breaking currents, coil voltage, switching frequency, quantity and any existing part number.

Before you order.

Can I choose by current and coil voltage alone?

Those are only starting points. Contact arrangement, load characteristics, breaking duty, coil duty and the complete variant also matter.

Is a high-voltage contactor a direct replacement for a standard DC contactor?

Do not assume interchangeability. Compare the complete electrical and mechanical specification and the intended circuit function.

Illustrations show application concepts. Confirm the selected product’s ratings, compatibility and installation requirements in its documentation. Manufacturer reference: Albright product families.
